Toor Dal Fry


Dal Fry is an absolutely delicious and most loved recipe of all times in the Indian cuisine. Dal Fry is basically prepared with all sorts of lentils on a thick gravy giving it a rich and creamy texture. People prefer the restaurant style dal fries at home too, because Indian meal is somewhat incomplete without a dal recipe. I love all sorts of dal fry that is prepared with any type of lentils, my most favourite is the Toor Dal Fry, whose recipe I will be sharing today.


Toor Dal Fry is a simple Indian dish made using the Toor Dal which is also known as Arhar Dal or Pigeon Pea. It is one of the most popular Indian lentil curries prepared in our day to day meals or for grand events too. Toor Dal Fry is one of the simplest dal fry recipes with a rich seasoning of sliced onions, ginger, garlic, tomatoes, and other spices. There are numerous ways of preparing this quick and easy dal recipe that can be made without any hustle bustle in a very short time. Toor Dal Fry is an easy and healthy lentil based soup, a choice for all the vegetarians digging into the thick gravy based curry on every meal and perfect for all ages.


Any type of Dal fry is the most basic dish that is suitable for all Indian households, it can be made using toor dal, moong dal, chana dal or even with the mixture of all kinds of lentils in one particular dish. The name of the dish 'Dal Fry' is basically very popular in the northern part of India, as it is one of the most authentic recipes of the Punjabis. However, in the age of fusion, Dal Fry is given an overall different look, method of preparation and richness depending upon the taste of different regions. Toor Dal Fry is the perfect accompaniment for rice or Indian flatbread.

Toor Dal Fry

Tips: Depending upon the thickness of the gravy you can add water adjusting to its consistency.

Ingredients:
  1. Toor Dal- 1.5 cup
  2. Tomato- 3 (large sized)
  3. Onion- 2
  4. Green chili- 6
  5. Garlic- 6 cloves
  6. Coriander leaves
Spices:
  1. Mustard oil- half a cup
  2. Bay leaf (tej patta)- 1
  3. Dry red mirchi- 2
  4. Panch Phoran- 1 tsp
  5. Turmeric powder- 1 tsp
  6. Red mirchi powder- 1.5 tsp
  7. Coriander powder- 1 tsp
  8. Salt - to taste
Method:
How to prepare ‘Toor Dal Fry’ with step by step pictures and instructions-
  1. Soak Toor dal in water for 2-3 hours.
  2. Chop the required veggies, and crush the garlic cloves.
  3. Heat oil in a pressure cooker, add panch phoran, bay leaf and dry mirchi for seasoning.
  4. Add the chopped onions, two slitted green chilies, crushed garlic and tomatoes, fry till veggies turn mushy and leave oil by the sides.
  5. Now add turmeric pwdr, mirchi pwdr, coriander powder, and salt. Saute for 2 minutes.
  6. Put soaked toor dal. Mix them well.
  7. Pour 2 cups of water, cover the lid and pressure cook giving 3 whistles.
  8. Remove the pressure of the cooker, check salt and water consistency. Add half a cup of water, bring to a boil.
  9. Add the remaining slit green chilies and simmer for another 5 minutes.Finally, add chopped coriander leaves and serve hot.
Toor Dal Fry is best served with hot steamed rice, chapatis or it goes well with any type of Indian flat bread.
